How to Work Through Relationship Problems: Communication, Connection, and Weekly Check Ins
Dr. Katelyn Murphy, LCSW, a therapist who works with individuals and couples experiencing relationship concerns, emotional disconnection, life transitions, performance pressure, and anxiety. She provides 100% virtual therapy services to clients living in Indiana, New Jersey, and Florida.
I like relationship issues. Weird, I know, right? Those words don’t typically go together. I don’t actually enjoy when people have them, but I enjoy working alongside people to help them navigate through them.
Also, we’re human. So it’s inevitable, we’re going to fight. If you don’t fight with your partner here and there, I’m actually more concerned. We’re all different humans with different preferences, and that’s the beauty of being in a relationship. You get to continuously learn something new about someone else.
Before I get too lost in the weeds here, I want to tell you why I like working through “people’s stuff.” I like the learning process of it. I learn something new every session. I think role-playing in sessions can be very beneficial because it provides a controlled, safe environment to practice new skills.
Something I also think is beneficial for couples is the Sunday ritual check-in. Okay, it doesn’t have to be on Sundays, but at least once a week, having a check-in with your partner can make a huge difference. Talk about gratitude, the hard stuff, and then probably some more gratitude.
Talk about the little thing they did that you forgot to thank them for, or the thing they have been doing for the past 20+ years that you have become numb to, but it still deserves recognition. Learn your triggers, learn your love language, and remember that relationships take effort, but they will always be worth it.
I will be frank with you: none of this will get better if you don’t want it to. You have to put in the effort, and you have to truly want to do the work for yourself, but most definitely for the other person too. If you don’t, you might want to sit with that for a bit and figure out what’s going on there. Or, even better, come see me, and we can unpack that together.
Take the time to actually listen to what your partner is saying. Maybe even take out a piece of paper and a pen so you can remember what their preferences are. Crazy concept, I know.
I also enjoy discussing the struggles of getting through a really bad breakup. We’ve all been there, trust me. You lose yourself, you forget who you are, and you don’t know where to start.
I think therapy can be a good first step. We will recap all of it, all the details, look for patterns, and together help you move forward and become an even better version of yourself. I promise you that through all of this, you will rediscover yourself and a resilience you didn’t even know you had.
I think humor and some good snacks help too!
